WHY IS LEARNINGBYTES NEEDED?

Learningbytes has three goals:

1. To foster creative and digital media skills that can be a stepping-stone to advancing non traditional students educational goals in high school and higher education.
2. To explain career options and educational paths to middle and high school students and parents regarding emerging digital media careers.
3. To encourage middle school and high school students and their parents to explore multimedia and entertainment as viable educational and career paths.

GOAL 1:

University admissions offices across the nation continue to search for ways to identify "non-traditional" candidates who might contribute greatly to and benefit greatly from their institutions. These institutions want to continue to increase access for students from diverse backgrounds. Regardless of which career path California youths pursue there will be an increasing need to fill a workforce in technology, entertainment and interactive medias that comprise one of California's fastest growing and largest industries.

Many Californian schools outside the main urban centers lack the resources, equipment and software that ensures their students will graduate on an even technical footing. From the start Learningbytes has been committed to working with schools and students to secure equipment, implement digital media curriculum, and mentor students about future studies and careers.

Within the next phase of developing the Learningbytes program we are creating a suite of interactive learning websites in film making (cool2film), web code (cool2code) and digital graphics (cool2create) that welcome middle school and high school students from all backgrounds.

GOAL 2:

From the very first Learningbytes Digital Video Seminar held at West Valley College in March 2007, we realized there was great need for a creative approach to learning and working with technology, and that if given the opportunity California teens are extremely interested to learn more about the potential careers in technology and the creative arts that drive the movie, gaming and interactive medias that they increasingly use.

In response to the need to disseminate information regarding this exciting and evolving industry Learningbytes is producing a web video series of Industry Interviews featuring professionals who share their stories and provide career related information. The interviews are specifically designed to cater to students of all backgrounds. Some of the professionals featured include a diverse make up of; photographers, film makers, scientists, artists, technology executives, musicians, community leaders, gaming professionals, activists, designers, radio producers and more.

GOAL 3:

From the beginning Learningbytes has encouraged parents and their children to participate in the Digital Media Saturday Seminars and peruse the career information and resources available at learningbytes.com. Most importantly, young students need to know that if they love technology, think or act creatively, and are inspired to tell stories and connect people, California will be home to future careers in a variety of technology and creative arts disciplines.
